The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. The 17 Goals are all interconnected, and in order to leave no one behind, it is important that we achieve them all by 2030.

To further assist our efforts in being a responsible and sustainable company, Finjan Al Basch will contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and align various targets from the 17 goals to our corporate governance and Together as 1 Pledge.

As part of our “Together as 1” pledge, we have aligned our sustainable sourcing goals with the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the agenda adopts 17 Sustainable Development Goals which are an urgent call for action to end poverty and inequality, to improve health and education and spur economic growth whilst tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

Our pledge ensures coffee is grown and traded in ways which support farming communities and their land. To meet our obligations in sourcing sustainable coffee, our buying team and supply-chain must meet stringent assessment criteria and must commit to a charter of ethical, socially responsible and behavioural standards

Sustainable Sourcing

It takes a coffee tree up to 7 years to reach maturity and can grow to a majestic height of 4 metres. A mature coffee tree can go on to live for anywhere between 60 and 100 years, the tree’s can only be grown at high altitudes and are almost always surrounded by the richest bio-diverse environments located on planet earth.

The farmers have to nurture each coffee tree for months on end diligently pruning and feeding them, so that it can flourish and produce numerous jasmine scented flowers that transform into ripe glowing cherries.

Once ready, farmers meticulously hand pick each individual fruit, ready to go through the drying and milling process that turns fruit to coffee bean.

The coffee bean in its unroasted state is a commodity traded globally by farmers, producers and distributors. It brings millions of people prosperity and is in some countries the primary export of which the entire national economy depends on.

Understanding Ethical Coffee Certifications

As part of our Together as 1 pledge and to further contribute to the United Nations SDG 2030 agenda, our buyers strive to source the most ethically grown coffee on the planet.

Ethical coffee from certified producers whom are members of either the Rainforest Alliance or Fairtrade bodies ensure that their workers are treated fairly, that child labour is prohibited and further safeguarding the wellbeing of the community and the surrounding environment.

Once ready, farmers meticulously hand pick each individual fruit, ready to go through the drying and milling process that turns fruit to coffee bean.

Rainforest Alliance

The Rainforest Alliance works with sustainable coffee farmers to improve their livelihoods and the health and well-being of their communities. Coffee farms or groups of smallholder farmers that earn the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal are audited annually against a rigorous standard with detailed environmental, social and economic criteria.

These criteria are designed to protect biodiversity, deliver financial benefits to farmers, and foster a culture of respect for workers and local communities. Rainforest Alliance certification also promotes decent living and working conditions for workers, gender equity and access to education for children in farm communities.

Fairtrade

When you choose Fairtrade coffee, not only can farmers build a better quality of life for their families and communities, they can invest in growing better quality beans too.

Choose Fairtrade coffee and you’re also supporting farmers to fight the challenges they may face. These include the effects of a changing climate, low and unpredictable incomes and in some coffee growing communities, there may not be enough food available for three to four months a year.

Being part of Fairtrade has meant better knowledge about protecting the local environment and the chance to plant other crops and buy livestock to put more food on the table.

To be accepted as Finjan Al Basch coffee all farmers & suppliers are inspected to ensure all our raw materials are sourced ethically and that suppliers adhere to local and international standards in their workplace, communities and to the environment

Our assessment criteria is based on our “Together as 1” pledge and the United Nations Sustainable Goals Agenda, it provides a framework for our buying teams to perform an appropriate level of due diligence on prospective suppliers before they are appointed as Finjan Al Basch suppliers & where appropriate continually ask our suppliers to submit progress reports detailing their commitments, accreditations and action plans in the following areas of workplace, how they benefit their communities and how they protect their local environment.

Our assessment allows us to track the progress of our supply-chain utilizing globally recognised standards and we aim to work as a unified front by continually engaging and monitoring their obligation in implementing best practices that support the prosperity and well-being of coffee farming communities, producing high-quality sustainable coffee and how they protect their local environment, particularly their efforts in conserving clean water, soil and the local landscape.

Our Sourcing Rules

All suppliers have to be transparent and their coffee traceable to its farm

Its always good to know where our coffee is sourced from. Our system is designed to preserve the authenticity of our coffee by having established guidelines which builds a visual roadmap that traces the entire journey from farm to production line.

Our assessment focuses on the coffee’s origin, processing method, quality and sustainability credentials.

We monitor the human rights of farmers

What is Human Rights?

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights,” reads Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Human Rights are fundamental and universally accepted rights and freedoms that are intrinsic to every human being regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity or religion. It protects your right to live and voice your concerns freely, freedom from torture and slavery and the right to work and education without discrimination.

Our supply chain is a global affair, it involves farmers and suppliers that are located around the world each observing their own cultures and beliefs. At Finjan Al Basch we value and respect this diversity and aim to uphold the highest levels of respect and integrity for all those who work with us or do business.

We expect our supplier to support and respect the protection of human rights by conforming to our policies and assessment criteria as well as in accordance with the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights and UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and to ensure that they are not complicit in any human rights abuses.

Finjan Al Basch expects suppliers to place emphasis on the human rights and welfare of vulnerable communities and apply strict code of ethics and practices which promote fair and equal treatment of women at work and their families and any indigenous people that surround farm and coffee producers.

Finjan Al Basch forbids human trafficking, forced or compulsory labour and any other form of modern slavery. We believe farmers and distributers have a vital role in combatting such illicit acts.

Any supplier found to contravene this principal will be struck off and reported to the relevant authorities.

Monitoring Suppliers

To fully realize our “Together as 1” pledge, Finjan Al Basch proactively assesses the environmental impact of the entire supply-chain particularly companies that report high emission rates.

It is important that our suppliers can document and evidence their global initiatives in mitigating their overall environmental impact in key area’s such as energy, water, recycling and many more.

Assessment Criteria: Environmental Impact, Nature Conservation, Recycling:

Suppliers shall monitor and improve on their energy consumption and water usage.
Suppliers must monitor their consumption of packaging materials and implement recycling strategies.
Where a supplier has solid waste, wastewater or polluting air emissions are discharged into the environment, adequate sustainable programmes must be in place to filter or treat as much of the waste as safely possible. Suppliers must work to minimise overall discharges by annually reviewing and reporting their environmental impact.
Suppliers must act as role-models by actively investing in protecting the local biodiversity and wildlife through sustainable programmes which promote reforestation, safeguarding the water table as well as promote recycling solutions which reduce plastics and paper waste.
Suppliers shall manage their logistical operations utilising monitors which track fuel consumption and their emissions during transit by land, sea and air.
Suppliers shall not engage in any poaching or hunting of animals.

Finjan Al Basch Criteria for Direct-Supply Coffee Farmers

Direct-Supply farmers and coffee cooperatives shall operate optimal irrigation systems to minimise the use and transportation of agricultural fertilisers and nutrients as well as to minimise the consumption of water.
Direct-Supply farmers and coffee cooperatives must work together to protect their local environment, and shall refrain from expanding into land that is at critical danger of deforestation or protects the rights of endangered animals.
Direct-Supply farmers and coffee cooperatives must not farm in conservation areas which protect endangered plant species or animals.
Direct-Supply farmers and coffee cooperatives must not contaminate or abuse the any water sources on or around their lands.
Direct-Supply farmers and coffee cooperatives are prohibited from expanding into territories inhibited by the indigenous communities in remote areas.
Direct-Supply farmers and coffee cooperatives are prohibited from expanding near landmarks which hold UNESCO status, religious, cultural or historical significance and will engage with local communities in preserving such landmarks and their boundaries.
Direct-Supply farmers and coffee cooperatives will try their best in giving wildlife and endangered species sanctuary in their land as long as they do not impede on the harvest. They shall avoid trapping or utilising toxic substances to exterminate wildlife and endangered species.
Direct-Supply farmers and coffee cooperatives are prohibited from burning their land to avoid the spread of fire that can endanger the local population, wildlife or natural eco-system.
Direct-Supply farmers and coffee cooperatives are prohibited from using fertilisers and insecticides which are deemed a danger to the local eco-system.
Direct-Supply farmers and coffee cooperatives are encouraged to use natural manure recycled from local livestock where possible.
Direct-Supply farmers and coffee cooperatives are required to monitor and record the use of fertilisers and insecticides.

Environmental Pledges

Our planet needs our help more than ever. This is a crucial time in our lives, the decisions we take today will influence the future of humanity, our precious wildlife, our weather systems and our natural flora.

In the last 100 years, humankind’s insatiable appetite for industrialism, technological & social advancement has come at a price to our planet. Rising global temperatures has led to a series of unpredictable weather events, seasons are becoming ever more difficult to predict and in some cases the impact has caused mass devastation to entire agricultural communities.

Coffee is grown in regions most at risk from climate change due to Flooding, Drought and Deforestation all of which contribute to crop failure and this impacts the livelihoods of farmers and their employees, it makes clean water and food inaccessible and can displace entire communities that do not have the means to pay for any emergency intervention and must wait for the land to naturally heal which can take months or years.

As part of our “Together as 1” pledge, our goal is to be a leader in environmental sustainability, both in the way we carry out our operations and in the products we sell and as part of our environmental pledge to better understand and together with the supply-chain rebuild the health of our planet and its environment.

Regular Maintenance

Regular maintenance of our plant equipment and heavy machinery equates to more energy efficient operations and avoids surges and and increased fuel consumption.

Regular Cleaning

Regular building maintenance including the cleaning of windows and skylights as well as cleaning lighting fixtures reduces the need for artificial light.

Smart Lighting

Our lighting systems are all commercial LED bulbs which have the benefit of being long-life and more energy efficient integrated with occupancy sensors that automatically switch off lighting when no one is present.

Smart IT Systems

Our IT systems are regularly maintained and are powered off after use. Where possible monitors, printers and other peripherals are prohibited from being kept on standby.

Our first phase solar investment will reduce our dependence on carbon based energy by a further 49%, these savings shall be reinvested into the development of our workforce and will increase our positive impact on local environments across the globe and further reduce our carbon footprint.

Reducing Water Consumption

Without water, life cannot exist. Water is a vital resource and although our planet is two-thirds water, fresh potable water is getting more and more scarce. Climate change and global demand has wreaked havoc on our water supplies, throughout the world, heavy storms and extreme temperatures have destroyed crops, contaminated the freshwater supplies and dried our natural reservoirs.

At Finjan Al Basch, we know and believe everyone has a fundamental right to clean potable water. Water advances healthy ecosystems, agriculture and commerce and as such we are committed to reducing our water needs and the discharge of waste water.

Luckily as a coffee roaster, we do not consume vast amounts of clean water. However to reduce our impact on the available local resources, we have invested in smart kitchen appliances, sinks and bathrooms that limits the amount of clean water discharged throughout our roasting facility.

Responsible Packaging

Packaging is an integral part of the products we deliver to customers. At Finjan Al Basch, we believe that our packaging should accurately reflect our commitment to the environment.

Our Sustainable Packaging framework sets criteria which assesses compliance with food safety regulations, must sustain freshness at all times, must be re-usable or fully recyclable and convenient.

Earth Strong Packaging

A modern day problem affecting our planet and the welfare of people and animals

Conventional consumer packaging is normally made of plastics, cardboard, metals or a mixture of materials.

The usual packaging lifecycle entails the production and printing of the packaging in one facility which is then transported and integrated into a production line somewhere else only to be either recycled or discarded into general waste once the food or beverage has been consumed.

This process consumes far too much energy and the accumulating waste is contributing to climate change and has a detrimental impact on our environment and wildlife.

Tin or Kraft? Our outer packaging has maximum appeal with the planet at heart

The first step in good packaging design is by managing an effective solution which minimises our impact on the environment therefore, we decided to do away with emission rich die-cut cardboard packages and traditional Mylar pouches made of multi-layer plastics.

For Finjan Al Basch the mission was since we’re purchasing mass quantities of packaging, how do we make modern, sleek and appealing but also carry a hidden benefit of being durable and hard wearing enough to be repurposed time & time again.

So we went for uber cool ethically sourced jute bags and wonderfully shaped tins.

Our labels are biodegradable & printed inhouse

Our art buffs love creating labels for our masterful coffee range and their very environmentally conscious. Full colour, shiny & informative our labels are more than a masterpiece their fully biodegradable which means wood free printing paper composed of 95% sugarcane fibres and 5% hemp and linen.

We also are trialling labels made from renewable wood pulp which has been sustainably harvested and transformed into a white or clear, high gloss material which can be safely used in packaging and labelling.

Lastly to make things even better, all our labels are printed in-house further reducing our carbon footprint on the environment by eliminating the need to have printers transport labels weekly.

Food Safe Tin For The Win

Many of our delicious coffee assortment and coffee rubs are packed in wonderful tins which come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Why Tin: Tin packaging has been around since 1809. Every tin we use can be repurposed easily to store many household things and can be used to grow plants as well. Their 100% recyclable and can last many decades without losing their shape or durability.

Handcrafted jute bags

Our jute outer packaging is constructed of a rigid breathable fibre finely weaved into a drawstring bag. Our bags are temperature resistant and highly durable and act as a primary barrier against contamination and spoilage.

Why Jute? Jute is a plant based fibre that only grows in humid climates around the world and is fed by rain, and requires little need for fertilizers or pesticides. Once the plant matures the stem and ribbon are processed into robust shiny gold threads.

Kraft Packaging

Our Kraft Packaging is Coffee Friendly, People Friendly, Earth Friendly

Coffee once roasted and ground naturally releases CO2 gas but at the same time must retain its freshness and flavour, at Finjan Al Basch we nominated to use a hybrid Kraft pouch with an integrated open-tear notch and internal zip fastener which considers our customers need for retaining flavour, ease of use and storage needs and meets our Sustainable Packaging framework criteria for recycling.

Biodegradable Packaging

Our coffee pouch is integrated with a one-way degassing valve which lets naturally occurring CO2 to be released, whilst the overall construction and pouch materials create a barrier which prevents light, contamination or spoilage. Furthermore, our integrated zip fastener safeguards the taste and flavour of your coffee beans or espresso blend by acting as barrier from oxygen and for added benefit in turn prolongs the shelf-life of your coffee.

Better Accessibility & Easier Storage

Our coffee pouches are constructed of materials that are 100% recyclable. The Kraft Paper material, aluminium coating, Zipper and de-gassing valve will all degrade naturally overtime.

Our integrated zip fastener aims to eliminate two critical environmental problems:

It eliminates the need for energy intensive storage and sealing accessories made from rubber, metals, plastics and glass.
Secondly the longer shelf-life reduces coffee waste to landfill.
